How to Drive a Commitment to Safety at Your Organization

APTIM’s commitment to safety is crucial to guarantee the well-being and stability of every teammate. Each level of the organization is committed to fostering a culture of prevention, ensuring that we take care of each other and are alert to potential risks. APTIM’s strategies for fostering a culture of commitment to safety include a behavior-based safety program, an incentive program, training in safety standards to reinforce the knowledge of our workers, field audits led by supervision, and a 5S safety program. Communicating Safety from the Top Down

Communication across all levels of the organization allows team members to understand each other, share information, make decisions, and solve problems, guaranteeing safe work completion. APTIM management constantly conducts field visits to workers, ensuring the implementation of safety programs. Feedback in work teams reinforces safe behaviors and corrects risky behaviors, which in turn ensures that activities are carried out properly, improves our performance, and forms our safety culture.

Harnessing Tech to Ensure and Measure Safety

Over the years, APTIM has implemented and adapted to new technologies by using state-of-the-art programs, such as Power BI; providing certain training using virtual media; and incorporating the use of digital platforms to share information with workers. We track safety commitments by measuring contractual KPIs, objectives, and OSHA rates. See the below examples of our safety dashboards.

Honoring Our Safety Commitment

Maintaining our safety commitments and engaging all teammates is not easy. APTIM faces challenges such as new teammates coming from a reactive safety culture. Our training and continuous support generate the shift we require to align with our proactive approach. We perform rigorous prequalification prior to hiring contractors and field monitoring during their activities. We also carry out psychosocial monitoring to identify factors that may affect the mental health and well-being of all teammates and implement improvement strategies.

As part of improving safety leadership and skills, APTIM maintains a leadership workshop for managers and supervisors, as well as The Collaborative Way® as a rubric for how we work with each other. We also involve teammates in the development and implementation of safety policies and procedures through field practices and cross audits between different disciplines.

Looking Toward the Future of Safety

Looking ahead, APTIM will continue to evolve to adapt to new safety realities and challenges through:

  • Regulatory Compliance: We must know the laws applicable to the industry and maintain a safety program that complies with them, including preparing a list of legal requirements and maintaining alerts for changes in legal provisions.
  • Risk Assessment: We will always update risk assessments to identify potential dangers and take preventive measures, maintaining records of incidents and accidents to analyze and improve our safety measures.
  • Safety Culture: We foster a safety culture, involving all employees and periodically reviewing safety programs.

Spreading Our Safety Culture

Finally, we want to encourage other organizations looking to drive safety commitments within their operations by following these key tips:

  1. Demonstrate leadership’s clear commitment to safety in all communications and actions, setting an example for all employees.
  2. Provide ongoing training on safe practices and specific work-related risks, ensuring that all employees understand safety protocols and how to act in an emergency.
  3. Foster a culture of open communication where employees feel safe reporting safety issues or suggesting improvements.
  4. Recognize and reward safe behavior.
  5. Conduct periodic risk assessments and regularly review safety procedures to ensure they are up to date and effective.
  6. Integrate safety into all aspects of organizational culture, from hiring and training to meetings and performance reviews to company decisions and actions.
  7. Investment in technology and resources to maintain a safe work environment, including personal protective equipment, physical safety systems, and cyber safety technology.
  8. Collaborate with other organizations on shared safety initiatives—sharing best practices and experiences can enrich your organization’s approach to safety.

By following these tips and taking a comprehensive approach to safety, organizations can create a safer and more secure work environment for all their employees, just as APTIM has.
